I’m worried to start therapy. What can you tell me?
– It’s completely understandable to be hesitant in starting therapy. It’s a new experience and anxiety will often keep you procrastinating and avoiding steps that may involve change. Furthermore, there’s an uncertainty to therapy and people may worry about falling apart, being judged, or may not have enough time in the week.
– We will take therapy at your pace and create a space where you can breathe and discuss what you feel comfortable talking about. Sessions are a place where you can feel open in a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere.
– It takes courage to feel the fear and do it anyway. While the process is sometimes difficult, it is worth it. Investing in our own mental health is an amazing way to experience growth.
How often should I come to therapy?
Everyone is different in their needs and preferences. However, usually people attend weekly or every other week. My recommendation would be to start more frequently and then change the frequency as we see progress.
What will the first session be like?
– Your first appointment will last 60 minutes.
How long are sessions?
The first appointment will last 60 minutes and appointments after that will typically last 50 minutes. I also offer longer sessions for additional fees.
What are your fees and do you take insurance?
– I like to discuss fees with each person individually to reach a fair price within a sliding scale range.
– Currently, I take Blue Cross Blue Shield and private pay clients. If it would be helpful for you to use insurance for therapy, please check to see your mental health benefits by calling the number on the back of your insurance card.
– For those out of network, you can contact your insurance company before our first session and ask them how much they reimburse you if you choose to see an Out-of-Network licensed LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor). I encourage you to find out if your insurance covers any out-of-network benefits. If so, I can provide you with a bill to receive all or partial reimbursement for the cost of the therapy session. Full payment, however, is due at the time of the appointment.
Why would I choose to pay privately instead of using my insurance?
– There is no requirement to document a mental health diagnosis for insurance.
– There are no session limits.
– Can receive therapy even if you don’t have a diagnosis.
– Less access to your personal information.
Do you prescribe any medicine?
No, I focus on therapy, but in case you do want to explore medication, it’s a good idea for someone who is taking medication to have his or her therapist in contact with the doctor who is prescribing medicine. That way you have a team working together on your behalf. Of course, this communication between therapist and psychiatrist only happens if you give written permission for it to happen. I can also help to refer you to prescribers in your area.
